Starting as a small start-up firm in 1984, Cisco had moved quickly through the organization cycle stages. Cisco moved from the entrepreneurial stage in 1986 when the company had to find means to attract investors to becoming a publicly traded organization in 1990. From inception of the company to the 2014 periods, Cisco had gone through three different stages influenced by external factors: Cisco 1, Cisco 2, and Cisco 3. Cisco 1 had a divisional structure; Cisco 2 had a functional structure; and Cisco 3 operated a combination of matrix and functional structure to enhance collaborations and quick decision making.
